The Story

"Who wouldn’t agree that it’s fun to go fast? But you don’t end up feeling trashed when you get back to the office."

In some respects BMC Switzerland’s CEO David Zurcher is an unlikely e-bike advocate He’s a fitness fanatic and has spent decades as a devout roadie. But when he tells you that he prefers to use his spare time for ‘re-energising rides’ and that he doesn’t want to feel ‘trashed’ at the weekend anymore, you listen.

Zurcher has been at the helm of BMC Switzerland since 2014. Just turned 50, he still looks in his athletic prime. Put simply, he is not what many would consider an archetypical e-bike user. He laughs: ‘The older we get, the busier we become. No matter how much you keep pushing yourself, it doesn’t get easier and that’s frustrating. You get back from a ride and you’re trashed. So forget about having fun with the kids afterwards, I can’t leave the sofa!’

He throws out what has become his favorite analogy: ‘Think of the added weight as your off-season weight. Barely noticeable, and very rideable. The assistance gives you huge scope for rides: more or less intense, tailored for recovery, or minimal for a workout. I see my heart rate rise more on this bike and I feel less fatigued afterwards. Although,’–he breaks into a grin–‘I’m sometimes glad I don’t always push as crazily as I once did.’
